HILLSBORO, Ore. (KPTV) - Students at a Hillsboro elementary school had an out-of-this-world opportunity Friday morning.

Students at Tamarack Elementary School planted a tree on campus that was grown from seeds that orbited the moon on board NASA's Artemis I mission.

More than 1,000 seeds from five different species traveled 270,000 miles from Earth on Artemis I as part of NASA's goal to establish a sustainable presence on the moon and prepare for future missions to Mars.

High school students in Keizer are heading to the East Coast to take part in a nationwide culinary competition.

The fun tradition started back in 1971 when seeds carried on Apollo 14 were planted throughout the country.
